Today, we look back at one of the pioneering organizations that shaped LGBTQ+ history – the Mattachine Society. Founded in 1950, it was one of the first gay rights groups in the United States, working tirelessly to combat discrimination and fight for visibility and acceptance at a time when LGBTQ+ people faced harsh persecution.

Among their groundbreaking moments, the Sip-In of 1966 stands out. In an act of defiance, members of the Mattachine Society staged a protest at a New York City bar, where they were refused service because of their sexual orientation. This bold action challenged the social norms and laws that discriminated against LGBTQ+ people, helping spark the broader LGBTQ+ rights movement that would follow.

In June 2021, the State Department made a major step forward in supporting trans rights by no longer requiring medical certification to change the gender marker on passports. Now, you can self-select your gender marker (M, F, or X) when applying for your passport without needing a doctor's note!

This policy shift replaced the outdated rule that required proof of medical treatment for gender transition, making it easier for transgender individuals to have their gender identity accurately reflected on their travel documents. ✈️🌍

Pansexuality is defined as an attraction to people of any gender or to people regardless of their gender, with the prefix “pan” coming from the Greek prefix for “all.” Pansexuality isn’t a more evolved or “politically correct” form of bisexuality; it isn’t more or less trans/nonbinary inclusive; it’s just a word to describe one kind of sexual orientation.

Panromatics are similar to pansexuals, but instead of a sexual attraction irrespective of gender Panromatics can have a romantic attraction to people of all genders. This doesn’t mean that they don’t care about sexual attraction at all, but it plays a significantly reduced role, and the main focus is on an emotional connection.

A study from researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has revealed that transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) minors in the U.S. under 12 have had no gender-affirming surgeries. In contrast, cisgender minors over 12 and adults were found to have substantially higher rates of utilization of analogous surgeries.

This research comes at a crucial time, as the U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing the U.S. v. Skrmetti case, which could potentially restrict access to essential gender-affirming care. Did you know that 1.7% of people are born with intersex traits? That’s about the same percentage as people with red hair! This means that millions of people around the world have bodies that don’t fit typical definitions of male or female.

Intersex is a natural variation in human biology where a person’s sex characteristics (like chromosomes, gonads, or genitals) may not fit societal expectations of what is considered “male” or “female.” These traits can be visible at birth, but often, they are discovered later in life, or not at all.
Let’s spread knowledge, challenge misconceptions, and ensure that all people—regardless of how they are born—are treated with dignity and respect. 🌍💖
